Our campus project is to make sure that students living in South Quad learn how to properly recycle and actually commit to it.  We choose to focus on South Qaud because many of the students are firs-years and live in that area. Today on our day off, the students shadowed employees that worked in the residence hall. Our purpose in shadowing the workers was to see how they collect the trash and recyclables in the South Quad.
My residence hall is Longden Hall, because I live there, and can always make changes. To start off, I myself really do not know wear exactly the recycling bin is. This is sad because due to me not knowing wearing the bin is located I have thrown recyclable goods in the trash, and this is a failure on my part.  In addition, the worker I work with notified us that not many residents on the first floor recycle. Because I live on the first floor, I think the reason for that is because not many people know where the recycle bin is located. To solve this problem we can make bigger signs that “Recycle bins are here.”
Another problem is that many students do not recycle properly. In the second floor we encountered chicken wings in the recycle bin. Although it is to be noted that resident recognize that the to-go boxes from the Den and Hub is recyclable. However, to solve this issue we can make a sign of what can be recycled and what cannot.
Lastly the problem that I thought was completely horrible was the fact that’s residents started to store their sports equipment in the recycle bins. This should not be allowed at all in any circumstance. This demonizes the importance of recycling and letting residents think it is okay not to recycle. To solve this issue we should educate student why recycling is important and why we must do it!
All in all, it was a great experience in shadowing the workers. I really cannot wait to start making moves on this project.
